The Cologne Cathedral International Art Competiotion

Role: Design, Modeling, 3d Visualization
Client: Nira Pereg
Year: 2024

This proposal was created for the Cologne Cathedral International Art Competition, an invitational initiative seeking a permanent artwork addressing the legacy of Christian-Jewish relations through a contemporary lens. Working as part of a team with artist Nira Pereg and researcher Hanan Belisha, we developed a concept that critically subverts the historical motif of the Synagoga sculpture—a figure traditionally used to represent Judaism in a state of defeat, often in contrast to its idealized counterpart, Ecclesia.

Our concept reclaims this figure, not as a symbol of erasure or blindness, but as an evolving presence—a reimagined, upright Synagoga, reinserted into the monumental space of the cathedral not in submission but in resilience. The work sought to counter centuries of anti-Jewish imagery within the cathedral with a dignified, assertive counterpart rooted in the present.

I was responsible for all 3D design and visualization, including the creation of multiple concept studies and a final 3D visualization set within a precise point cloud scan of the Cologne Cathedral. My work focused on integrating the proposed sculpture naturally yet powerfully into the cathedral’s Gothic architecture, honoring its sacred heritage while gently reframing its symbolic vocabulary. The scale, atmosphere, and spatial interaction were developed with deep attention to both visual impact and historical sensitivity.

Our proposal advanced to the finalist phase of the competition—an acknowledgment of both the concept’s depth and the execution’s technical and emotional precision.
